How we grow our own Trachycarpus palm trees from seeds

Roger picks some Trachycarpus Palm tree seeds fresh from a Palm tree, and then has a go at sowing the seed as soon as possible. The seeds are picked from a female flowering Palm tree - which has been pollinated by a male flowering palm tree nearby to produce a huge crop of berries. Roger is doing this in spring (April) in the UK, so the berries have already been exposed to light frosts and plenty of rain .. this may help with germination as the outer coating of the seed has been reduced by the winter weather, so that the seed is more easily exposed to the soil . Roger soaks the seeds in a bucket of water for a few days to further reduce the coating around the seeds and then sows them in a well drained sandy compost. The seeds are ten put in a greenhouse with an average spring / early summer of around 10 - 25 degrees C (approx 70 F) - a garage / shed / conservatory / windowsill could also be used if you haven't got a greenhouse. Then the trick is to check the soil regularly, and only water if starts to go dry (it doesn't want to be soaking wet all the time) ... and WAIT !! germination can take a few months ... we will keep you posted with our progress.
