HOW TO BECOME A WORK HEALTH AND SAFETY OFFICER IN AUSTRALIA REQUIREMENTS A qualification in occupational health and safety is typically required to become a Work Health and Safety Officer. A formal OHS certification may be required by some employers. Complete a Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety (BSB41419), Diploma of Work Health and Safety (BSB51319) or Bachelor of Occupational Health and Safety. Complete additional certificates and licences as required. Some hirers may prefer you to have a First Aid Certificate and Construction Industry Induction Card (White Card). Gain experience in an OHS role. Once you have gained industry experience, consider applying for certification with the Australian Institute of Health and Safety (AIHS). This can improve your employability and may be required by some employers. Once certified, you will need to renew annually and complete ongoing professional development.  What's it like to be a Work Health and Safety Officer? Work Health & Safety Officers are responsible for ensuring the safe and compliant operation of an organisation. They implement defined Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) strategies which identify hazards, assess risks to health and safety, and use state-of-the-art tools and techniques to avoid accidents and injuries. Tasks and duties Promoting healthy and safe working methods and practices in the workplace. Ensuring state-of-the-art health and safety compliance across the whole organisation. Identifying, recording and reporting hazards, accidents, injuries and health issues. Assisting with investigation of accidents, studying possible causes and providing remedial advice. Conducting health and safety training sessions for management, supervisors and workers. Assisting with rehabilitation of workers after accidents and overseeing their successful return to work. Coordinating emergency procedures and first aid crews. Developing OHS plans and monitoring compliance. Inspecting workplace and related tools and equipment to ensure compliance with regulations. Work Health & Safety Officers often work on–site, providing a go–between from shop floor to middle management by monitoring OHS compliance and providing technical advice. They have strong administrative skills and are certified through Vocational Education and Training (VET). Work Health & Safety Officers work in an increasingly broad range of industries, including manufacturing, construction, health and mining. TAFE / VET Vocational Education and Training (VET) courses such as certificates, diplomas and advanced diplomas prepare you for work by providing practical skills.
