Range Drills for Law Enforcement - Part 3

The MOST IDEAL way to run this would be to have a friend there to randomize target locations and implement "shoot/no shoot" target ID by either drawing on the target or taping pictures of various objects onto the targets. Also, I should have moved the targets a bit further away from the threshold to give more room. The setup: Setup barrels, VTAC barriers, or any object that can simulate a doorway. place targets in various locations inside the "room". As stated above, its ideal to have a friend that will be able to randomize the target locations and implement target ID. The drill: Work on engaging while conducting your panning process. You can do a "Mozambique" style drill when your engaging, so 2 to the body and 1 to the head, or you can shoot for just speed and putting as many rounds on target ASAP. The why: The general WHY behind this drill, is to combine two skill sets (shooting, and CQB footwork), and make sure both of them are functioning properly at the same time. This is just one very niche thing that I think is important to TEST your firearms skills as a LEO in a context that is consistent with an engagement scenario you could find yourself in on the streets. You should absolutely be training your base fundamentals MORE OFTEN then doing stuff like this. Not only is the drill fun to do, but really the "test" is to see if ANY of your fundamentals fall apart while working two skill sets at once, CQB footwork, and in this case, rifle fundamentals(or pistol if you get reps with your pistol). If your going to make entry and you are not able to get a consistent mount with your rifle(or presentation with your pistol), step back and work on some presentation drills, Isolating out JUST that element of it (I am aware, there is a debate about compressing your rifle during entry, I think its valid to work both compressing the rifle, AND not compressing the rifle when entering. If your able to do both fast and effectively, it just comes down to knowing when/why you would do one over the other). If your footwork falls apart due to focusing too much on the shooting part, you can do the footwork part in dryfire in your house/apartment(just make sure to follow all dry fire rules such as clearing your gun, no ammo on your person, or around where you are going to be working).
