Cycling along the canal network in Kildare, the journey starts at Newbridge train station, Cycle by road (5kms) to join the canal at Milltown bridge. This is called the 'Milltown feeder' the rain water from the Curragh drains into 'Pollardstown Fen' and then into this feeder canal which flows along to supply the Grand Canal system at the summit level near Lowtown. From this level the canal system drops through locks in three directions, east to Dublin, south west to the Shannon and south to the Barrow. I cycle to Lowtown and them onto Allenwood where I turn around and head back towards Dublin. I pickup the canal passing 16th and 17th locks. I then re-join the canal on the new Sallins to Straffan greenway and then onto Hazelhatch. Where darkness falls and I opt for a train home.
