The word prune is a verb which means to cut down some parts – usually the excess branches of a tree or plant in order to make it grow better. In removing the unwanted parts of a plant through pruning, the gardener carefully cuts off parts of the plant which are diseased, dead, damaged etc in order to ensure that the rest of the plant is not adversely affected by these unwanted parts. Pruning is a very important garden skill that all gardeners should master and regularly practice in order for their plants to grow very well. Pruning ensures the longevity of plants. Plants that undergo proper and frequent pruning enjoy more longevity than those that do not. Pruning plants regularly ensures that all diseased and damaged parts of the plant are gotten rid of to ensure the smooth growth of the plant. If diseased or damaged parts of a plant are not removed quickly, the disease can spread and take over all the parts of the plant. Pruning will ensure that the plants remain healthy because pruning helps in controlling diseases and pests attacking the plants. Pruning improves the appearance and beauty of the plant.
