We live in an era increasingly enlightened by improving knowledge about how and why people learn, forget, and make decisions. This knowledge comes from decades of discoveries by a diverse set of allied disciplines dedicated to improving our understanding of the human mind. Today it seems unsurprising, perhaps even imperative, that there exists in the world an organization like IHMC focused on the study of cognition in humans and machines. A century ago, however, this would certainly not have been so. Back then, the prevailing opinion was that the internal workings of the mind were not even a valid topic of scientific study, because they were not directly observable. Fortunately, that archaic way of thinking has fallen out of fashion. In this lecture we will enjoy a metaphorical “flight” or “sampler” of insights about our minds, all of which have some relevance and implications for our everyday lives.
