#kathmandu #patandurbarsquare #earthquake The tale is old and familiar—much like the aristocratic families of the Italian renaissance—the Mallas of Nepal were a cosmopolitan dynasty in power between the 14th and 18th century. Beauty, aesthetics and cultural marvels were the hallmarks of their era, as is evident in the exquisite display of temples and heritage sites which make up the Patan Durbar Square. Among the three durbar squares in the Kathmandu Valley, the Patan Durbar Square which is a mere 30-minute drive from Kathmandu city centre, is the smallest and some would say the most beautiful. A by-product of sibling rivalry between the three kingdoms of Nepal (circa 1600s)—Katmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur—in the contentious environment of politics, warfare, and intrigue, emerged this flourishing for Newari arts and culture. Patan Square, Nepal: Architectural Influences The fascinating lattice-work of Hindu, Buddhist, and Newari architecture, gives unique expression to the vibrant cultural and artistic boundaries that existed in historic Patan. They were influenced by both the Mughals and the Buddhist architecture of Sanchi, Ajanta and Ellora. A walk down modern-day Patan though tells quite a different story. A precarious journey through the maze of intertwining streets stemming from the durbar square gives you a glimpse of houses and shops perched upon stilts, angled downwards. They are part of the visual remnants of the Gorkha earthquake in late April 2015. KVPT's Durbar Square project is responsible for restoration and seismic proofing of at least 16 historic structures around the Patan Palace. Among these are the Charnarayan, the Vishveshwara and Harishankara temples. Also notable is the east wing of the Sundari Chowk where the royal family would bathe and prepare for morning rituals in the temple. Patan Square, Nepal: A Piece of History “Most of the sites had their structural bones to some extent. We also had documentation of the buildings dating back to the seventies as a blueprint. In certain places we have chosen to leave evidence of the earthquake as a reminder of the socio-cultural and physical history, but mostly we will restore it to the initial condition,” Roka explains. Patan Square, Nepal: Men at Work Craftsmen from the neighbouring region of Bhaktapur come to Patan for work. This is where traditional craft is kept alive working with tin, clay and brick, restoring the various temple carvings. There is still much left to be desired in terms of community engagement and awareness building, Roka says, but slowly with the attention received by KVPT, things are beginning to move forward. The heritage sites under the programme are in different levels of completion but the ambitious deadline set for most is July 2019. Thanks for peeping into my life. This daily vlog describes me.
