James Chambers - who everyone knows as Jimmy Cliff (but today only a few seem to know that he was and is one of the big early stars of reggae) turns 80 today!! With his super hit Vietnam, released in 1969, he was also one of the first popular musicians to turn to politically motivated protest songs; and Bob Dylan once called it “the best protest song ever written.” And: my story about him is this: at some point (it must have been 1970 or 71) I was given (it must have been Aunt Siegrid) the brilliant double album “24 Top Hits International” (Philips 6612019). For me it was full of great music back then: Sir Douglas Quintet, Blue Mink, Lee Patterson Singers, Steam, Airship – and: Jimmy Cliff ...
