Can I Afford to Buy This Car? This question is not asking if I can afford the payments for this car. I’m talking about the price of the vehicle itself. Advice: Try to spend no more than half your annual income on a car, or even better, just 10% of it. Saying you can afford to buy a $30k car because you can afford $700 a month is a lie. You end up with a vehicle only worth $15k after the fact. Buy a used, quality vehicle with a lot of life left in it. Drive it until the wheels fall off. Donate it once repair costs exceed resale value, write it off on your taxes, and get another used car. 2. Can I Afford to Own This Car? This question is so important, and it’s not that simple. Insurance, potential repairs, and fuel efficiency—these are all costs we don’t think about but are part of ownership. Think About That: Buying a big truck over a sedan isn’t just about the sticker price. There are many more costs associated with it. 3. Does the Vehicle Work for Me on a Daily Basis? Think about your life and whether the car matches it. Is the car appropriate? My aunt was once trying to sell me a BMW 5 series, I think it was. Her pitch was that when you go places in this car, people will treat you differently. But I don’t like attention. I see a lot of people buying cars they have no business owning. Why does someone need a pickup truck when they sit in an office all day? 4. Do I Need to Buy This Vehicle, and Why Do I Want It? It’s hard to take a hard look at ourselves, but it's key to knowing the truth. We’ve been conditioned to think that cars add value to us (not true—they are tools, not status symbols). Do You Really Need: A sports car? A pickup truck? Or a fancy luxury car? There should be pride in finding a good deal and buying what you need for a good price. There is no pride in buying something you don’t need. 5. Am I Making an Emotional Decision in Purchasing This Vehicle? “I’ve always wanted this car.” “This is my favorite car.” “I love this car.” “This car represents me.” These are all signs that you are making an emotional decision. Your decision-making should be more like this: “This car is good quality.” “I can buy it used for 50% off.” “I still have 100k more miles to go in it.” 6. Have I Considered All My Options? When my wife wanted a car, she had 2 options: Her dream car, a Mini Cooper, and a Honda Fit. These were, of course, two limitations she gave herself. While searching the market: She realized that Mini Coopers were expensive and made by BMW, so they weren’t cars you’d want for the long term and weren’t very kid-friendly. The Honda Fit was more expensive than the Toyota Corolla, with less comfort. She ended up buying a Toyota, which wasn’t even in her original options. Lesson: You have to open your eyes and explore more options. 7. Are You Having Second Thoughts? You shouldn’t buy something you want overnight—give yourself time to consider and think. You shouldn’t buy something if you have doubts about affording it. Really take the time to consider everything.
