Enjoy this dreamy tour of Lowther Castle, a country house near Penrith in the Lakes District of Cumbria, England. The estate has belonged to the Lowther family since the Middle Ages. Built between 1806 and 1814, Lowther Castle was demolished in 1953 by James Lowther to avoid a £25 million in taxes on his inheritance of the property from grandfather. All that remains of the castle is its shell, which offers a romantic otherworldly ambiance thanks to the garden scheme created by noted landscape designer and plantsman Dan Pearson OBE. After more than fifty years left in ruins, in 2008, Lowther’s gardens were re-imagined by Pearson, who developed a 20-year landscape master plan. Pearson specializes in naturalistic perennial planting and he brings the 17th century garden back to life with plantings that beautifully complements the architecture in a way that is magical and moody, with an air of mystery and timeless beauty. @Lowther_Castle is set on 130-acre gardens, which were first formally laid out in the 17th century by the first Viscount, Sir John Lowther. The Knot Gardens was where fruit and vegetables were grown for the then Lowther Hall kitchens. Garden relics such as the Roman Bath and stone columns provide reminders of the mid-Victorian period; while the Rock, Japanese, Sweet-Scented and Iris Gardens hark back to that early Edwardian period when the Yellow Earl was enthusiastically trying to keep up with the very latest in horticultural fashion. (Thomas Mawson was one of many garden designers he employed.) The site was originally settled in 1120 by Dolfin de Lowther, a nobleman descended from Viking conquerors. In the late 17th century, the 1st Viscount Lonsdale rebuilt the family home on a grand scale. The current building was built by Robert Smirke for the 1st Earl of Lonsdale between 1806 and 1814. The family fortune was undermined by the extravagance of the 5th Earl of Lonsdale, a famous socialite, and the castle was closed in 1937. Its contents were removed in the late 1940s and the roof was removed in 1957. For over half a century, the place was empty and home only to chickens and pigs. The gardens were lost to wilderness.
