DR650 project: derestricting and power mods overview︱Cross Training Adventure

From the guys at https://www.fullforceracing.com.au How to unleash the beast! How to derestrict the DR650 and some great budget power mods to turn a stock DR650 into a serious adventure bike weapon! We look at derestriction for the carby, exhaust system, jetting and the GSXR muffler too. Full Force Racing Components will upgrade the suspension in stages too. PERFORMANCE MODS & TIPS FOR THE SUZUKI DR650 / DR650SE After suspension, some basic derestriction mods can make the biggest transformation to the DR650. And even better, the mods can vary from free to just a few hundred dollars to unleash the beast within. Today we are at Gordon's property where he's work his magic on heaps of DR650s in our area. A modified DR650 is a real beast with 40HP at the rear wheel... I shit you not. It is a real beast once you cut the chains that hold it back. There's a wide range of jetting kits and carbie mods available, but today we are just looking at mostly simple do-it-yourself mods that can be done very cheaply and give you great performance and economy without an obnxiously loud bike. And you know how we feel about loud bikes. This is how Suzuki have managed to choke the tiger and turn it into a lamb. WHAT IS HOLDING THE BEAST BACK? 1 The carby has a terrible needle tailored for crap performance & economy 2 The carby has very poor throttle response 3 The fuel/air mixture screw is set incorrectly 4 The muffler is every restrictive and barely allows a sparrow's fart 5 A poor weld in the header pipe restricts the exhaust gases even further 6 Once a decent muffler is fitted, a larger main jet is needed 7 The airbox is too restrictive once a decent muffler is fitted. Auscanvet and I worked on a set of videos explaining the 'BST magic' mods for the carby and he's suggested this new thread just to have an introduction and full set of instructions in the one thread - hopefully this will be easier than reading pages of info trying to put the pieces together! These are simply mods Auscanvet has worked out over years of experimenting - we don't claim they are the 'best' mods available, but they are great if you like the budget do-it-yourself approach. The vids also look at the GSXR exhaust mod which works so well with the carb mods - a big thanks to mxrob for paving the way with much of this. BST MAGIC: DO-IT-YOURSELF STOCK CARB MODS Some easy do-it-yourself mods to the stock DR650 carb will result in: - increased power ( or more MPG if you don't use the extra power) - faster and easier starting - running much smoother at low revs - faster throttle response - longer life for the carb slide. As a rough rule of thumb, modifying the stock carb unlocks about half the DR650's potential, a less restrictive exhaust does the rest. You can buy aftermarket jet kits and exhaust pipe for similar results, but if you like budget do-it-yourself mods try this BST magic as per the videos below. Part of the fun is grinding your own carb needle but don't stress about messing up this easy procedure... simply buy a new needle (about $10) and start again if you mess up, or just buy a jetting kit. WHY IS THE STOCK DR650 SO RESTRICTED? 1 The carb has a terrible needle tailored for crap performance & economy 2 The carb has poor throttle response 3 The fuel/air mixture screw is set incorrectly 4 The muffler is very restrictive and barely allows a sparrow's fart 5 A poor weld in the header pipe restricts the exhaust gases even further 6 Once a decent muffler is fitted, a larger main jet is needed 7 The airbox is too restrictive once the carb and/or exhaust are modified. THREE SUGGESTED LEVELS OF MODS Here are the three levels of derestriction depending on how far you want to go. The key to remember is keeping all the mods working together. For example, if you open up the airbox but don't modify the carb, the bike won't run well. After years of experimenting these are Auscanvet's personal recommendations.
