Cleanup Crew In A Goldfish Tank: Shrimp Vs Otocinclus Vs Nerite Snails.

Cleanup crew in a goldfish tank Shrimp Vs Otocinclus Vs Nerite Snails We take a look at how these algae eaters fair in a goldfish tank. Shrimps They do not fair well with goldfish, especially cherry shrimps as they look like big fat bloodworms. The goldies will be gunning for the cherries. If you intend to keep shrimp anyway, I would suggest you stick to amano shrimps. Firstly, I have found them to be the most hardy. Secondly, their translucent bodies allow them to blend into the surroundings, making them hard to detect. Just make sure to provide as many hiding spots for them to take refuge in. Though amano shrimp are great algae eaters, do not expect them to do much in your goldfish tank as they'd be hiding among the hardscape, away from your goldies' detection. Otocinclus Catfish I have been having these fish around since the goldfish were little. I have 5 otos in the tank and the goldfish are not bothered by their presence. They are a joy to watch swim around. They clear up algae really fast as a group. Have good situational awareness of their surroundings and are quick to dart away if any goldfish come too close. It has been said that these fishes will attach themselves onto goldfish and suck on their slime coat and that they pose as a choking hazard if goldfish ever swallow them. I have not noticed such behaviour.....yet. Zebra Nerite Snails They have pretty striped shells and go about their business of cleaning the tank very slowly. The downside of having them is the crazy amount of sesame seed like eggs they lay everywhere. I would have to scrub them off with my finger nail and it's pretty annoying. I suggest you get only male nerite snails if you do not want to contend with this problem. That is if you know how to tell them apart. Like what you see?
