BARGING THROUGH FRANCE - PT 26 - ARLES

In this final episode of Richard Goodwin's adventure through France, he visits the area of Arles. The Greeks founded Marseilles in the 6th century BC and the beginnings of Arles date from the same period. The Romans took over after the Greeks and Arles became over the years an important part of the Roman Empire. The Romans built a ten thousand seat theatre and a huge arena. The intensity of light in this colourful and varied city is what inspired Van Gogh. As a matter of fact Van Gogh produced nearly 300 paintings and drawings during his time in Arles. The statue of St. Jacques reminds the visitor that pilgrims pass this way on their walk to the tomb of the Saint in St. Jacques de Compostella. The culture of the city is very old and very varied. The Arlesians are warm and convivial and live most of their lives in the summer months outside in the streets in the cafes and parks. Nicole Niell is a sculptress and a professor of design. She is passionate about the local traditions and really knows about the traditions of the Arlesianne women. The women have a very distinctive hair style and Nicole explains exactly how it is contrived. She explains all the nuances of the costumes they wear for the annual parade through the streets which is a truly fascinating, spectacular event. In the parade, even the children dress up and they go on doing this all their lives. Nicole costumes one of the girls who will be in the parade and by end you will be able to help your beloved to dress as an Arlesianne. We visit a jeweller who makes a special kind of earring that the ladies of Arles wear, called the dormeuse(the sleeper). It is made in two parts, the bottom half is removable at night. We see the handover from one Queen of Arles to the next. They reign for three years and become ambassadors for the Arles region all over the world. The ceremony finishes in the Roman theatre and all sing the famous hymn of Arles and the South, Corpo Santo.
