Now back to the Op - On March 25th, 1944, we find ourselves amidst the action at RAF Predannack, Cornwall, England accompanying an RAF Mosquito squadron on a crucial mission over the Atlantic. The ranks of this expedition are the distinguished 618 and 248 squadrons, spearheading the search for elusive U-Boats. Notably, 618 Squadron, known as the "special detachment," played a pivotal role in testing and perfecting experimental, top-secret weaponry. Our focal point in this animated narrative is Flight Officer Des Curtis D.F.C, a key figure whose endeavors are intricately chronicled in the gripping pages of "A Most Secret Squadron," a book authored by none other than Flying Officer Des Curtis D.F.C himself. This particular tale unfolds during his intense encounter with the U-boat U976 in the Bay of Biscay. The setting is the shallow waters near Ile d'Yeu, strategically positioned at the entrance to La Pallice, now La Rochelle. The U-boat, identified as U976, is desperately navigating the shallow waters to rendezvous with its convoy in an attempt to return to its submarine pen. The stage is set for an unforgettable skirmish, echoing the valor and determination encapsulated in the pages of Curtis's firsthand account.
