At 38 years old, former construction worker and father of 5 Kameli Soejima is the oldest member of the Japanese 7s team. Born and raised in Fiji, he met Japanese physiotherapist Aya Soejima through a family member when he was 24 years old and followed his heart to Japan only a few months later. Upon arriving in Japan, Kameli worked as a construction worker for 7 years, until a sterling performance for his local club’s sevens team earned him a spot in the Japan Sevens programme and - only 2 years later - a place in the team that ran out for Japan at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Kameli openly speaks of doubt, disappointment and despair that nearly led him to hanging up his boots a number of times. However, he credits his love for rugby, the drive and ambition that saw him turn professional after 30 and the support of his family for keeping him in the game.
