Sound Like a Native - Ch vs. Sh | EASY ENGLISH PRONUNCIATION Choose or shoes? Chip or ship? Chop or shop? Pronouncing these words correctly will not only avoid confusion while you speak, but also make you sound more natural and like a native. Many students care so much about pronunciation, and while it is important to say words correctly, I don't believe it is the most important aspect of learning a language. Pronouncing words like a native speaker may sound nice to your ear, but it won't make you more fluent or grammatically accurate. So, when should you care about pronunciation? In my opinion, you should care about pronunciation when poor pronunciation is making your English LESS accurate, as it sounds like you are saying the wrong word. Today's topic is a perfect example of correct pronunciation is not just a bonus, but essential to being understood well. The difference between Ch and Sh is very different for many non-native speakers to hear and say, but it's definitely important. Why? Because there are so many words which have the same ending sound, but start with either Ch or Sh. Choose and shoes, chin and shin, watch and wash. When saying these words, you want to make sure the listener knows exactly what word you are trying to say, so they don't get confused. How do they differ in pronunciation? Well, the most important difference is the length of time you spend making the sound. The “sh” sound is usually easier for non-native speakers to make, and is a much longer sound to make. You put your lips close together, put your teeth together at the back, and push air through your mouth. The “ch” sound is a much shorter, and harder sound. Start by making the shape with your mouth as you did for “sh” my putting your teeth together at the back, and bringing your lips close together. But instead of having a steady flow of air through, we are just going to have one, strong puff, and open our mouths towards the end.
