General Munro

"The Catholic & the Presbyterian can demonstrate the ways of God to man. We have a stake forever in this nation The rights of man are the banner we salute, religious freedom the butt from which we shoot" “The General in this song was Henry Munro, a linen draper, born in 1768 of the town of Lisburn. He was a Presbyterian and an ardent advocate of Catholic emancipation, and to forward this object he joined the United Irishmen in 1795. In the era of the French Revolution there had grown up around Belfast a strong liberal community of middle class Presbyterian gentlemen whose political views were far in advance of the ruling class or the small farmers and weavers of the countryside. It was from this community that General Munro sprang. Having been elected leader of the insurrection in County Down, he captured Saintfield on the 11th June 1798 with an army of some 5000 men. The battle of Ballynahinch began on the 12th of June and it was after dark on the same day that 2000 Catholic defenders deserted. On the following day, the 13th June 1798, General Munro was defeated betrayed and captured by the Royalist forces. It is surely ironic that these Royalist forces were largely composed of the Monaghan Militia under Colonel Leslie of Glaslough and that they were almost 100 % Catholic. Nothing is ever simple in County Down” (Ballads of County Down by Cathal O’Baoill) After the battle Munro fled alone and unattended to the mountains; but was eventually captured, tried by court-martial, and executed at Lisburn, opposite his own door. He displayed wonderful fortitude at the foot of the gallows; gave directions concerning an unsettled account with a neighbour, and after uttering the words, "Tell my country I deserved better of it," gave the signal for his own execution. His widow survived until February 1840.
