Nate Wood: Infectious Grooves at Stephans Basement -

Nate Wood worked with Snarky Puppy - George Harrison - Chaka Khan - Sting - Wayne Krantz and many more... a project by "musig im pflegidach", powered by MURIKULTUR, Muri, Switzerland - live recorded 13. August 2022 - His solos for stephan's basement showcase qualities that discreetly refer to this all-in-one routine. The arsenal of instruments he plays here sounds as if he had inserted each sound body individually into the groove. In this way, he succeeds in conducting sound research in the midst of highly complex patterns. With his filigree playing, he walks in the footsteps of a drum style that comes from Roy Haynes and Billy Higgins. These two drum icons may not be direct or apparent influences on his music, but they have effectively demonstrated what it means to maintain both timekeeping and subtle shading amidst driving rhythms. This attention to detail distinguishes Nate Wood's style; still his music never disintegrates into individual parts. He allows a percussive chorus to resound and provides accurate voice leading with great clarity. His attention to detail is evident in the way he often plays simple basic patterns, then varies them with what I like to call 'in-between rhythms': microstructures that emerge inside a groove. While they would generally be called fill-ins, in Nate Wood's differentiated rhythmic world they are actual intarsias, finely chiseled and full of beauty. An important musical principle is here presented in an improvisatory way: variation. So much freedom lies in merely varying patterns - what instrument could show this better than the drum kit, which stands on so many legs at the same time? sound - Christian Kaufmann & Simon Huber gimbal - Samuel Bitz color grading - Christian Kaufmann editing & concept - Stephan Diethelm with the support of the Josef Müller Stiftung Bundesamt für Kultur Stephan’s Basement presents the leading drummers of our time, each performing a short, but profound solo in Stephan Diethelm’s rehearsal room in Muri, Switzerland. more Nate Wood here at https://www.drummerworld.com/drummers... #natewood #drummerworld
