And it makes an excellent upper respiratory remedy. Marshmallow is a perennial of the Malvaceae family, scientifically called Althaea officinalis. Althaea means to heal. Officinalis means used in medicine. Althaea officinalis translates to “to heal and use as medicine”. This is an important herb to have on hand for soothing lungs. I often include it in herbal formulas and suggest you have some on hand too. Therapeutics This high mucilage plant soothes inflammation, irritations, and dryness: for respiratory system, digestive system, urinary system, and topically on skin. Actions: emollient, demulcent, antitussive, vulnerary, anti-inflammatory, cooling, yin tonic. Useful for: Respiratory: dry coughs, laryngitis, bronchitis, croup, etc. Digestive: ulcer, gastritis, and other gut inflammatory issues. Urinary: cystitis, urethritis, etc. Skin: burns, sunburns, eczema, etc. Biography & Habitat Native of Europe, North Africa and Western Asia. Now grows in eastern North America at the edges of saline and brackish marshes, in full sun to part shade. It likes rich moist soil. Happily grows in gardens. Found as far west as Nebraska, south to Arkansas, and north to Quebec. Hardy in USDA zone 3-9. Plant some, if none grow in our area!
