Gabriel Bianco - 'Fantasie Hongroise' by J K Mertz

This performance of the 'Fantasie Hongroise' by J K Mertz, comes from Gabriel Bianco's London debut concert on March 19th 2024 at the famous Trinity School, Croydon London. Fantasie Hongroise - Johann Kaspar Mertz (1806-1856) Johann Kaspar Mertz was born in Pressburg, now Bratislava, then the capital of the Kingdom of Hungary and part of the Austrian Empire in 1806. He was active in Vienna between 1840 and 1856 which had been home to various prominent figures of the guitar, including Anton Diabelli, Mauro Giuliani, Wenceslaus Matiegka and Simon Molitor. As a guitar virtuoso, he established a solid reputation as a performer. Mertz's guitar music, unlike that of most of his contemporaries, followed the pianistic models of Liszt, Chopin, Mendelssohn, Schubert and Schumann, rather than the classical models of Mozart and Haydn, or the bel canto style of Rossini. Fantaisie Hongroise, Fantaisie Originale and Le Gondolier were published as Trois Morceaux Op.65 in 1857, one year after Mertz’s death. This work consists of three pieces in a key relationship (A major, E major, E minor): every fantasia contains some motifs derived from the others. Because of the related motifs all three pieces are loosely connected, albeit they are quite different in nature. Fantaisie Hongroise is a kind of rhapsody, with many Hungarian themes, that is reminiscent of a rhapsody by Franz Liszt. Gabriel Bianco is considered to be one of nowadays’s finest classical guitarists. Gabriel has won first prize in several international competitions, has performed in over fifty countries spanning every continent, and has recorded 8 CDs. ADAMI Classic Revelation in 2011 as well as first prize competing in Sernancelhe (Portugal, 2005), Ile de Ré (France, 2006), Gitarre Forum Wien (Austria, 2006), “Silesian Autumn” in Tychy (Poland, 2006) , “Hubert Käppel” in Koblenz (Germany, 2007), Barbezieux (France, 2007), Guitar Foundation of America (United States of America, 2008), “Fundación Gredos san Diego” in Madrid (Spain, 2011), “ Andrés Ségovia” in Almuñecar (Spain, 2012).
