Natural reserve Zelenci. Kranjska Gora, Slovenia

Zelenci is a wetland in the valley that stretches between Podkoren in Rateče and is surrounded by several peaks of the Julian Alps and Karawanke mountains. Owing to its exceptional and rare geological, hydrological, ecosystem and landscape characteristics, it has been protected as a nature reserve since 1992. At Zelenci, the Sava Dolinka rises from numerous tiny sources and some 45 km downstream joins the Sava Bohinjka. They jointly form the Sava, the longest Slovenian river that passing later through Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina after 940 km drains into the Danube. The Zelenci wetland bears witness to an interesting geological history. Its origin dates back to the Ice Age, when the area was covered by a thick layer of ice. Eventually, the valley was dammed owing to the glacial activities and the torrents' alluvial deposits from the surrounding slopes. Korenjško jezero (lake Koren) was formed, at the bottom of which limestone was deposited. The lake gradually emptied itself, leaving the Zelenci wetland as known today behind it. #zelenci #zelencinaturalreserve #slovenia
