Easy RV Battery Box Modification

Welcome to Our Little Camper Adventures. In this video I will share with you 18 easy steps on how to change your flimsy RV battery box to a more robust lockable, insulated and eventually heated battery box. Tools and items used are below. Steps are below. Items purchased/used: Harbor Freight metal tongue box 35 inches M8 130 x 90mm U bolt square brackets (total of 6 needed) M8 stainless steel lock nuts and lock washers M8 stainless steel washers M8 stainless steel nuts Rubber washers Pink insulation Reflectix Reflectix tape Victron 712 Battery Monitor 1/0 gauge 12 inch red and black wires with 3/8 lugs 2 gauge 4 foot cable with 3/8 lugs 90 degree copper lug ¼ hole for 2 gauge wire Cable glands for 1/0 gauge wire Rustoleum primer and black color spray paint for metal Keep the original Camco battery box straps Tools: Drill Drill bit 21/64 size for metal Hole saw 1 ¼ inch size Wire cutter and crimper for large gauge wires Electrical tape Painters Tape Marker or Pen Razor or Jigsaw Wire brush Steps: 1. Move propane tank platform forward. 2. Remove your WDH hitch brackets if needed. 3. Turn off power, turn off solar & disconnect wires from batteries. 4. Remove the batteries and remove the old box. 5. Enlarge the 4 original holes using the 21/64 drill bit. 6. Mark and drill additional holes for all the U brackets. 7. Wire brush, prime & paint holes. 8. Painters tape bottom of box, mark where U bolts will go through & drill using the 21/64 metal drill bit. 9. Prime & paint battery box holes. 10. Mark holes for cable glands on back of battery box. 11. Cut 3 holes using the 1 ¼ inch bi-metal hole saw, prime & paint. 12. Push the U bolts up through the bottom of the holes , attach a nut (not the lock one), lock washer, washer and then rubber washer the each ends of the U bolts you pushed through under the frame. 13. Push the U bolts into the battery box holes, attach a rubber washer, the metal bracket included in the U bolt bag, metal washer, lock washer and then a lock nut. Tighten bolts. 14. Install the old battery box straps. 15. Insulate the box. 16. Strap in batteries, pull wires through the cable glands. 17. Cut off 3/8 lug from 4 foot cable, attach ¼ hole lug, reattach to 100 amp breaker. 18.
