The Citadel was started in the 1790s, and throughout the 1800s was rebuilt while the fortifications were made more substantial. By 1860 the Citadel's only access was via the drawbridge over the moat that surrounds the fort, and to this day it remains the only way in and out. The officers mess and quarters, seen in the foreground, was constructed by Major William Jervois in 1860. He designed it as a defensible keep, bomb-proof in the event of the Citadel being stormed by the enemy. In 1956 the Citadel was handed over to the HM Prison Service and used subsequently as a borstal, a young offenders institution and then as an immigration centre until 2015 when it was closed. The site is now empty and currently up for sale. The weather and lighting weren't ideal when I filmed this, but I don't know what parts of the fort are going to be destroyed by its future owners, so I wanted to capture this amazing building before it was lost.
