Where computation and fabrication meet: Using computers to mimic biology (Zack Booth Simpson)

Zack Simpson will talk about the unique ways the living world exploits technology; living things, he explains, are computational machines that manipulate matter. He will discuss mimicking biological methods through synthetic biology and molecular amorphous computing. Simpson will take a long view of technology, spanning thousand of years and touching on topics as diverse as architecture, electrical engineering, and biology. Zack Booth Simpson - Research Fellow, Center for Systems and Synthetic Biology - University of Texas at Austin Zack Booth Simpson is an artist, scientist, and entrepreneur. A high-school dropout at 17, he became a top video-game designer and at 23 was named director of technology at the video-game company Origin/Electronic Arts. He later started making interactive art, and his artwork is now in permanent installations in more than 40 museums around the world. In 2003 he began working with the Center for Systems and Synthetic Biology at the University of Texas at Austin, where he works on projects ranging from chemical kinetics to synthetic biology. His entrepreneurial efforts include two art-based companies and a web-based bio-informatics company. http://www.mine-control.com/zack/ http://www.cell.com/abstract/S0092-86... http://www.mine-control.com/zack/bus/... http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content...
