‘Eating disorders’ are often understood as shaped by the cultural environment in which we live, particularly representations of the body and messages about gender. Drawing on feminist approaches to eating problems, it can be argued that cultural aspects are nonetheless neglected in clinical treatment contexts, and poorly understood in popular discourse. In her 2019 inaugural lecture, Prof Su Holmes (School of Art, Media and American Studies) drew upon empirical research to examine how and why feminism might not be ‘welcome’ in this sphere, and the consequences of this exclusion for how eating problems are understood and treated.
