Mombasa Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the centers of Kenya's cultural heritage. The old town is inhabited by a richly diverse group of communities. Africans, Arabs, Persians and Asians co-existed on the island for thousands of years before the advent of Portuguese rule, Omani rule and the colonial era. The diverse social, political, religious and economic activities of these groups have created a distinct character and culture which together has come to define this old town. The visible aspect of this unique character is a collection of historical buildings which combine, African, Arabic and European influences.
