Developed in Wales, it was bred for its hunting abilities, particularly with badgers, foxes, and otters. The dogs would go down into the dens to drive out the prey for the hunter and would usually be taken out with packs of hounds. It takes a courageous, tenacious, and robust dog to dig an aggressive badger from its sett, and this breed was certainly up to the task. In England, the breed was first shown in 1884. The breed was initially introduced to America in 1888 by Prescott Lawrence. In fact, the United Kingdom added them to the list of breeds that are at a high risk of dying out.
