It typically lies in the retrocecal position, behind the cecum. It is occasionally found in the pelvic region, subcecal, or pre-ileal or post-ileal positions. Its position can vary and in some people, it can also be located near the right ovary and fallopian tube in women or near the right ureter and bladder. Arterial Supply: The arterial blood supply of the appendix is derived from the appendicular artery, a branch of the ileocolic artery, which is a branch of the superior mesenteric artery. This artery travels through the mesoappendix to reach the appendix. Venous Drainage: The venous drainage of the appendix is via the appendicular vein, which empties into the ileocolic vein. The ileocolic vein then drains into the superior mesenteric vein, which eventually joins the splenic vein to form the hepatic portal vein, carrying the deoxygenated blood to the liver. Nerve Supply: The appendix receives its nerve supply from the autonomic nervous system. Sympathetic fibers come from the superior mesenteric plexus, and parasympathetic fibers come from the vagus nerve (CN X). These nerves are responsible for transmitting pain signals, especially during an event like appendicitis. Histology: Histologically, the appendix is similar to the rest of the colon. It is lined by simple columnar epithelium with goblet cells. However, the appendix is unique because it has a large amount of lymphoid tissue in its walls, especially in children and young adults. This lymphoid tissue can respond to infections, leading to inflammation and appendicitis. It also has layers of muscle, allowing it to contract, although it has a minor role in the movement of contents through the gut. #appendix #fmge #fmgevideos #rapidrevisionfmge #fmgejan2023 #mbbslectures #nationalexitexam #nationalexittest #neetpg #usmlepreparation #usmlestep1 #fmge #usmle #drgbhanuprakash #medicalstudents #medicalstudent #medicalcollege #neetpg2023 #usmleprep #usmlevideos #usmlestep1videos #medicalstudents #neetpgvideos #nextmbbs #nextexammbbs #next1 #nextexamcurrentaffairs #nextexammcqs #nationalexittestanatomy #medicalstudentvlog #medicalstudentmotivationalvideo #medicalstudentstoday #medicalstudentlife #medicalvideosanimated #medicalvideos #mbbsvideos #anatomyvideos #next1videos #next1exams #nextnmc #nmc #nationalmedicalcommission
