Chamar is a word for which there has been a long struggle for social respect and these castes have had to suffer a long period of exploitation due to the sting of casteism. But this is not all. In the 2024 Lok Sabha, Nagina MP Chandrashekhar Azad, while presenting his views during the discussion on the President's address, raised a big demand for the Chamar Regiment and also asked that when there are regiments in the name of other castes in the army, then why not the Chamar Regiment? Why was the Chamar Regiment formed and then why was it abolished? What is a regiment? In simple words, a regiment is a group of soldiers which is bound by a rule and order. Every regiment has its own distinctive colour, uniform and insignia and achievements in the battlefield. A regiment is a part of the organization of the military forces which may include battalions, which are small fighting units. Brigade of Guards, Rajputana Rifles, Gorkha Rifles, Punjab Regiment etc. are some of the regiments of the Indian Army which together form the Infantry Regiment of the Indian Army. If we look at the history of the Chamar Regiment, this regiment was established on 1 March 1943 in Meerut Cantonment. Before this, for a year it was on trial basis as the 27th Battalion of the Second Punjab Regiment. Only soldiers of the Chamar caste were recruited in the 27th Battalion. When they proved their mettle in arms training and physical abilities, then the Chamar Regiment was formally established as an independent regiment.
