A Hidden Gem in Wick - A Welcoming Break on the NC500

After covering over 1,200 miles on our motorcycle journey through Scotland, we decided to take a well-deserved break in the charming town of Wick, nestled on the northeast coast. Spending two nights in this often-overlooked town gave us a chance to recharge and explore a place rich in history and character. One of the highlights was visiting the Old Pulteney Distillery, home to one of my favorite whiskies. The distillery tour was a fantastic experience, allowing us to learn about the craft behind their distinctive maritime malt while sampling some of their best pours. The locals’ friendliness made our visit even more enjoyable—everyone we met was warm, welcoming, and eager to share stories about their town. Wick felt like a town frozen in time, a place that seemed to have been forgotten by the modern world. It was fascinating to learn that in the 19th century, Wick was once one of the busiest harbors in Europe, a bustling hub of the herring industry. Walking through the old streets and down by the harbor, we could almost feel the echoes of its vibrant past. For anyone tackling the NC500, Wick is a perfect spot to take a breather. It may not have the fame of other Highland destinations, but it’s a place that leaves a lasting impression with its history, hospitality, and the unique taste of Old Pulteney. If you're passing through, make sure to stop, take a moment to explore, and enjoy a dram of the town’s finest.
