Just got back from a great one day buddy golf trip that spanned two states in one day to play two Pete Dye Gems. The first course is the fun and challenging Nemacolin Woodlands Resort's Mystic Rock. Mystic Rock is a former PGA Tour host and is attached to the amazing Nemacolin resort. Mystic Rock is a beautiful layout that works it's way through the subtle rolling hills of Southwest Pennsylvania. Almost every hole is visually beautiful and filled with its own challenges. Choose the right set of tees because the course can play longer than expected but is firm and fast for a resort course. Conditions were great and the only downside was our forecaddy who was very annoying and ruined the first 12 holes of the course. The course works through and around rock formation which are the true hazards on this course if you by chance hit a errant shot assume you will take relief because found balls are almost impossible to get out. Mystic Rock is the #1 public course in Pennsylvania and the #67 Best Public Course in America. I was extremely fortunate enough to get a tee time at the private Pete Dye Golf Club in Norther West Virginia which was a hour southwest of Nemacolin. Pete Dye did an amazing job laying out a course through a old coal mine. Pete Dye Golf Club is filled with dramatic elevation changes, creeks, lakes, hills and waterfalls. While fairways are generous in true Pete Dye fashion your line to the fairway looks tighter than it is and your focus should really be on the second shot than your first. Pete Dye Golf Club is #60 on America's Greatest Golf Courses and it is well earned ever hole is memorable. The membership and staff were very friendly and accommodating.
