Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Mor Ardain - Roaming the Wastes Jazz Arrangement || insaneintherainmusic

Am I the only one who thinks this song sounds a lot like Thriller? Also, who said double reeds can’t work in jazz? Insaneintherainmusic's jazz cover / remix of Mor Ardain - Roaming the Wastes from Xenoblade Chronicles 2, featuring 8BitBrigadier on Flute, Medllix on Oboe, and Bassoonify on Bassoon. I haven’t played Xenoblade 2 yet (though it’s looking like it’ll be my next big RPG to play on the Switch…), but as soon as I heard this song for the first time, I was blown away. It’s like Gaur Plains 2.0! Sab Irene came up with the fun idea of incorporating double reeds into a jazz arrangement! While this is a more contemporary jazz example, and you’d probably have a harder time getting a double reed instrument to fit in a traditional jazz combo setting, I think Medllix and Bassoonify did an awesome job with their parts in this arrangement! 8BitBrigadier has been on the channel before as well, and he always brings his A game! All three of their channels are linked near the top of the description. Finally, I’d like to discuss the arrangement structure that I chose for this arrangement! I’ve been really interested in musical form lately, most notably how musical form creates expectations and resolutions. I view arranging as a form of storytelling, and to test my view, I thought I’d try something I hadn’t done before: base the arrangement of a piece on an outside narrative. For this particular arrangement, I chose the Hero’s Journey archetypical structure, since Mor Ardain has a very heroic sound to it, and certainly evokes those emotions in my mind. I researched the specific plot elements of the Hero’s Journey a bit online, and worked to make different sections of the arrangement match different parts of the plot structure by representing them musically! For example, the “Call to Adventure” section shifts the key of the song from B minor to F minor, which is a tritone away. If you’re unfamiliar with music theory, that’s basically flipping harmony on its head, as a tritone is the farthest away from the home key that you can modulate. I also chose to use the woodwinds in this arrangement to represent characters! I envisioned the Flute and Oboe as the protagonist and sidekick in this arrangement (we’ll decide exactly which one is the protagonist and sidekick later…), and used the Bassoon to represent the mentor figure that assists the hero. These instruments are feature prominently throughout different sections to represent the plot structure musically! One example of this is the Ordeal section, where the hero are fighting against in the bad guys in an epic battle. This is literally depicted in the arrangement as a solo trading section, with the tenor sax representing the bad guys, and the woodwinds playing in soli voicings to represent the good guys all working together! All in all, this was a really fun idea to expand this arrangement a bit, and if you’ve read this far in my explanation of it, kudos to you! I’m always trying to improve my arrangements, and using an external plot structure to help me lay out the foundation of this arrangement was a really great way to tackle this wonderful song.
