Fostering collaboration, versatility, and sustainability through remote language documentation

Presentation given by Leah Pappas at the Language Documentation and Archiving conference #LDA2022 Language documentation efforts over the past decade have shown that community engagement leads to more sustainable documentation and to data that more accurately reflects the community's knowledge and patterns of language use. In support of these ideas, I present a case study of documentary research conducted on the eastern Indonesian language of Hawu since 2019. I compare data that was collected when I, the foreign researcher, was present in the language community (what I call the in-person model) and data from when I was not present (the remote model). I observe that the remote model has distinct advantages that should be considered by LD&C researchers. I suggest that future language documentation work should prioritize community training with the goal of incorporating both in-person and remote research methods into a versatile and sustainable project.
