Giratina Happy Halloween all! It's very rare that Halloween actually falls on a Saturday, so I knew I had to do something special for it this year. I hadn't originally planned on covering the Distortion World or Battle Giratina music (since I thought they'd be too challenging to arrange for my style), but I realized that these themes would be a perfect fit for the Halloween season! The Distortion World is absolutely one of my favorite locations in Pokémon ever. It's such a unique location compared to the rest of the Pokémon series. No wild Pokémon, very spacious and almost non-melodic music, waterfalls that you can surf UP... it's a cool place. I remember being enthralled by this location as a kid, and I can only imagine what a location like this might look like in a potential remake/remaster of Pokémon Platinum! Also, who can forget the scene atop the Spear Pillar where Cyrus is pulled into the Distortion World? I think that's the only jumpscare anywhere in a Pokémon game... I wasn't wrong when I had my hesitations about arranging these themes! Let me tell you - this might have been the hardest video for me to put together yet, from an arranging / performing standpoint! The Distortion World theme itself wasn't too bad. The clarinet + bass clarinet textures worked really well for replicating some of the serene sounds of the original track, and the other woodwinds contributed to that as well! I treated the arrangement as an expanded wind ensemble piece, taking inspiration from composers like David Maslanka and John Mackey to nail some of the weird textures. I had SO much fun recording the start of the piece using the mouthpiece / neck glissandos on the woodwinds! I knew that I needed a smooth portamento sound, and there's not many ways to do that on woodwind instruments, so I decided to take apart my instruments and see what sorts of sounds I could get with just the mouthpieces. Maslanka's Symphony No. 4 really inspired me to try this out - there's a section in that piece where the clarinets play using only their mouthpieces and barrels, it's brilliant! And then came Giratina's Battle theme. Oh my gosh, this might have been the most ridiculous piece I've ever had to perform for the channel. There are so many intricate little technical passages in each instrument part, and they all work together to create a tapestry of organized chaos. I think "organized chaos" aptly sums up all this music in a nutshell, haha! I threw in quite a few passages instructing the player to "play random notes" or do overtone glissandos to add to the chaos! I also incorporated these techniques in my bari sax solo, which is probably my craziest solo ever on the channel. Not necessarily crazy in the sense of playing intricate and well thought out lines, but just... sheer chaotic caveman energy! I've listened to Leo P over the years, and even had the pleasure of meeting him last year at a show at Berklee, and I tried to capture some of his energy for that solo! Anyway, hope you enjoy! This arrangement is ridiculous. Maybe I'll do something easy next... but who am I kidding. ♫ "Distortion World" from "Pokémon Diamond / Pearl / Platinum" composed by Hitomi Sato ♫ "Battle!
