A Dance with Metal: Movarid Alavifard’s Journey Through Making and Self-Expression

"The first time I touched metal, I knew it was a material I wanted to work with. , it was just magical. When I make. I have the relationship with the metal. It's like a performance." Morvarid Alavifard, an Iranian precious metal artist based in the UK, specialises in silversmithing and jewellery techniques. She holds a master’s degree in Jewellery and Metal from the Royal College of Art (RCA), where she was supported by the Behrens Foundation Bursary Scholarship, and has been awarded a Silvers Fellowship from Yorkshire Artspace to further develop her practice. She also spent a year at Bishoplands Educational Trust, where she earned the Jane Goodman Award and Bursary. Her background in architecture and music adds depth to her artistic vision. In her The Whisper of Freedom Collection, Morvarid uses traditional silversmithing to transform silver into a diary that captures her internal struggles, reflecting her emotions through exaggerated, conflicted forms. Inspired by a visit to Isfahan, Iran, each bowl in the collection, traditionally a vessel for life and light, is imbued with symbols that convey a range of feelings. Through these tactile creations, she invites others to experience a sense of freedom and expression, allowing the unspoken to be felt and understood. Morvarid Alavifard is one of sixteen makers to showcase her new The Whisper of Freedom Collection as part of the Goldsmiths’ Centre’s Shine 2024 new talent showcase in jewellery and silversmithing. Shine provides UK-based early career makers with a unique opportunity to participate in an intensive taught programme, upskilling participants to present a new collection of work as part of a physical exhibition at the Goldsmiths’ Centre (3-minutes from Farringdon, EC1M 5AD) and for purchase online.
