The theme of my talk centers around the importance of positive and abundant representation of differently-abled individuals through media, education, and social networking, and how these resources are then able to be used to make connections between disabled and able-bodied individuals. The aforementioned topics play a vital role in encouraging the average person to look at someone who is differently-abled for who they are and what they can contribute to the world, not for their physical or cognitive differences. Therefore, encouraging the inclusion of differently-abled individuals and shifting the perspective of the general population will successfully change society’s mindset that an individual’s ability equates to their worth. I am a student, artist, and advocate for the importance of diversity and inclusion in all aspects of our being. I have Achondroplasia - the most common form of Dwarfism - which, throughout my lifetime, has allowed me to witness how differently-abled individuals are treated by society first-hand. I am immensely thankful to have been given the opportunity to shed light on the importance of this topic within my speech This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
