Release Date: October 2019 Rating: Rated E +10 for Everyone +10 Developer: Obsidian Entertainment Publisher: Private Division Platforms: PC, Xbox One, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox Series s/X Genres: Open-World Action RPG --------------------------------- "The Outer Worlds" is a single-player action RPG developed by Obsidian Entertainment that released in 2019. It's set in a dystopian future entrenched in bureaucracy where mega-corporations hold all the power and place little value on life. Gameplay-wise, its very similar to recent Fallout games, but set across multiple small colonies, which does however make the game much more linear. The main story line can be completed in about 25 hours, but there is tons more content if you want to explore and do side-quests. There's huge variety on how you approach the game, including moral decisions, avoiding fights, or spec-ing your character to give you access to alternative routes or unlock dialogue trees. Combat is fairly solid if unexciting, with a good variety of upgradable ranged and melee weapons, and you can have computer controlled companions to fight along side you. The well implemented stealth and bullet-time mechanics do add some tactical elements to the fights, but combat can get messy quickly with numerous bullet sponges charging you at once. Graphically, even when the game was release a few years ago, the engine was showing its age, but this game is more about the depth of writing and story development than visual polish, and it's more than sufficient to deliver the story, despite a few reported technical issues with the game. In summary, it just feels like a pared down and linear Fallout game, but that's not necessarily a bad thing given the emptiness of some fallout worlds. Despite the lack of originality, it still has a lot to offer, and has enough choice and options to make a second play-through worthwhile if you enjoy the game.
