In this video I'm showcasing a couple of Wrenn A4's and an N2. One is 'Merlin' in LNER Wartime Black. This was originally a sad and worn looking BR Green Mallard which had seen far better days so I thought I'd give it a go with a new makeover. Fortunately, as is the case with most Wrenn and H.D., they are from an operational standpoint usually still good runners as was the case here. I stripped it down and removed the paintwork and printing from the body shell by submersing in caustic soda, while using plastic model paint remover for the tender. I spent a great deal of time deep cleaning and polishing the brightwork (wheels, motion etc) and replaced the carbon brushes. The build up of dirt, detritus, and dried oil deposits had to be seen to be believed. Two coats of primer were applied before finishing with several coats of satin black. The loco was finished off with Fox Transfers and etched nameplates. I replaced the Wrenn/H.D. buffers with LNE style metal buffers. The other A4 is something of a rarity. 4498 'Sir Nigel Gresley' in a gloss finish Garter Blue livery with red wheels. This model has larger driving wheels and is fitted with a five pole motor. Only 170 of these were produced and I believe this one was one of the very last produced before closure of the factory in 1992. Whether all of this run of 170 were finished in a gloss I'm unsure. The little N2 is in LNER 'Apple Green'. Rolling Stock: Pullmans are all Hornby-Dublo, Early Hornby (Margate) LNE Teak coaches in crimson/cream and Tri-ang suburban coaches in crimson. Thank you for watching.
