Kathgola often refers to the Kathgola Palace. Kathgola Gardens, also known as the Kathgola Temple. Owned by a Jain businessman family, the Dugars, they hired a French architect to renovate a part of the palace in the late 19th century and added the Victorian lions and Michelangelo statues. This palace is a perfect blend of art and architecture and connoisseurs of true art will get a taste of both. Once you go past the marble lions and the statue of Michelangelo, you will see the Adinath Temple (Jain Temple) inside the premises of the palace. Built in 1933 by Lakshmipat Singh Dugar. Kathgola Palace is a four-storeyed palatial palace in the Kathgola Bagan (Gardens) with a small pond and a baoli (step wells). The entrance of this Palace is adorned by two horse statues believed to be of the two brothers who built this palace. Kathgola Bagan Bari in Murshidabad belongs to a wealthy family who I was told had relation with Jagat Seth. The Palace has an ornamented facade with valuable paintings, mirrors and priceless furniture from the nineteenth century like Palonko (a high bed), arm chairs and marble dining table and chairs and also a palki (palanquin). The family was well educated and many went to Oxford. Their certificates are also on display. Many from the family joined politics and were prominent Congress leaders. Kathgola Palace used to host mujra during its prime days. Famous baijis (nautch girls) from Kolkata’s Boubazar, Lucknow and Delhi came here to perform. Some of those baijisl were so expensive that they charged Rs 5000/ for an hour in those days when it was huge amount. William Watts and Walsh met Mir Jafar, three days after the Battle of Plassey in 1757 and conferred concerning payment of the amounts stipulated by them before the battle was fought. Nowadays Kathgola Bagan Bari is rented out for film and television shootings. The famous Bengali mega serial Janmobhumi was shot here.
