Welcome to the first part of our Sumba adventure! Sumba, located in East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, is a hidden gem often referred to as Indonesia's "Forgotten Island." Just an hour's flight from Bali, this island boasts rugged terrain, traditional villages, rich cultural heritage, and stunning beaches. 🏝 Getting There Sumba has two airports: Tambolaka Airport (TMC) on the west side and Umbu Mehang Kunda Airport (WGP) in Waingapu on the east side. Both offer direct flights from Bali, making it easy to access this secluded paradise. Upon landing, you'll notice the absence of commercial development—no 7-11s or Circle Ks, no traffic lights, but wild buffalo strolling the streets. Where We Stayed We opted for the charming Alamayah, a budget-friendly boutique hotel located in Kerewe, a seaside fishing village. Owned by an Australian couple, this gem allows visitors to explore Sumba's untouched beauty while enjoying locally built and operated luxury. The hotel staff made our stay incredibly special with their thoughtful gestures and top-notch service. Surf Adventure - Day 1 Our first surf spot was Cocos. Just a 15-minute drive from Alamayah, we trekked through a jungle path to reach a secluded beach. The waves were powerful, and although I struggled against the strong current, the experience was humbling and thrilling. Surf Adventure - Day 2 Determined to redeem myself, I surfed the spot right in front of Alamayah, Kerewe. Despite the big waves and strong currents, it was an amazing experience. The breathtaking scenery and the challenges of surfing Sumba's powerful waves added to the adventure. We ended the day with a private sunset experience overlooking Marosi Beach and the white cliffs of Watubella, arranged by the amazing team at Alamayah. The untouched landscape and stunning sunset were unforgettable. Waterfall Trek On our third day, we trekked to Waikelo Sawah waterfall, a serene spot with crystal-clear, turquoise water and lush rice paddies. The limited tourism here keeps it pristine, a stark contrast to the Instagram hotspots like Canggu. Sumba's natural charm and cultural richness make it a truly unique destination. We hope it can retain its beauty and avoid the pitfalls of overtourism seen in other parts of Indonesia. Stay tuned for more adventures in Sumba in our next episode! 🔔 Don't forget to Like, Comment, and Subscribe for more travel diaries!
