Sometimes it is the small things that make the biggest difference in day to day use. In this series I am going to show off the delighters in SolidWorks 2014. When selecting multiple parts in an assembly it is now possible to mate them in the context menu, just like relations in a sketch. When selecting a part in an assembly the feature tree scrolls to the part (if the option is set), but when you deselect it, it scrolls back to where it was. Smart mates now has a toggle button to easily add several smart mates without modifier keys. Lasso selection now allows a more freeform shape for making selections. It is simple enough that it is possible to use without any adjustment time. It simply enhances your selection options to use a box select but exclude desired items. One of my favourite enhancements in 2014 is sticky settings. When using previous versions of SolidWorks some settings are remembered in the current session. For example if you extrude and set a draft angle of 8 degrees, this will be remembered until you close SolidWorks. In 2014 these settings now persist between sessions as well, less typing is always a good thing. Text and button sizes are now controlled in the SolidWorks settings rather than using the Windows DPI setting. Many of the UI changes that are not customizable were done to make SolidWorks easier to use for the visually impaired. This change does not affect me but will affect many of my students.
