(John Lennon’s Ultramarine Army) What secondarys do you think your Opponent will choose? Who is the aggro? In every game there is a player who will win the game if NEITHER play did ANYTHING. For example, a Dark Angels Player on the Overrun mission could score 95 points (40 primary, 45 secondary, and 10 painting) by choosing ‘To the Last’ ‘Stubborn Defiance’ and ‘Raise the Banner’s High’ and never leaving their deployment zone. If you want to beat that player, you must go to him. You are the aggro. Analyze each match -- How is the aggro? And how can you deploy to support that dynamic? What is the key terrain? As a Blood Angel player, I try to leap frog from obscuring terrain to obscuring terrain. Note which pieces of terrain are important for you to control. Deploy in ways that allows you to exert pressure on those pieces, and move into them over time. 2) Pre-game Questions you SHOULD to ask Do you have any re-deployment abilities? Do you have any pre-game moves? What is the max threat range of X unit? 3) Deployment Phase Tips How to protect your models. Do one of the following Block LOS Stay out of Threat Range Hide in DS/Reserve Offer dispensable units As an addendum to B, you don’t always need to stay out of max threat range. A white scars Vanguard Vet has a max threat range of 30 inches, but will only make a charge that far 10% of the time. A movement 6 marine with a 24 inch bolter, will have a 100% chance of being in range if 29.1 inches away. Balance risk vs reward. Don’t always stay out of your opponents threat range, if being closer improves your game plan more than it improves your opponents. *The video talks about specifics of deploying in ruins and playing by intent here, and I suggest you watch the video since its much easier to explain with graphics and animations* 4) Deployment Walkthrough 1) Seize important terrain: Your forward deploying models can prevent your opponent from seizing terrain, since they have to stay at least 9 inches away. Use this forward deployment to take control of key pieces of terrain picked out earlier. 2) Delay decisions with chaff units: Cheap troop units and backfield objective holders will help delay the inevitable deployment of key units. Deploy less important models first so that your opponent has less choices by the time the important models are deployed. 3) Place critical units in advantageous positions: Finally, place your key units and models in the most advantageous positions.
