The short beaked echidna is probably one of the weirdest creatures on earth! It's a mammal that lays eggs - EGGS! This is Bruce, our short -beaked echidna at Paignton Zoo. Also called spiny anteaters, echidnas are walking contradictions. They are mammals, but they lay eggs. They also dont have have beaks at all, at least not in the traditional sense; their noses are fleshy. They also don't really look like true anteaters (Myrmecophaga tridactyla), and they are not closely related to them. Echidnas are monotremes. The only other living monotreme is the platypus. Needless to say Bruce has scientists and researchers stumped, but not keeper Nadia.
