You'll never EVER hear me say "Break it down into shapes." Nothing makes me more irritated and frustrated than hearing that phrase. Even if I could break something down into basic shapes like a circle or an oval, I sure couldn't draw them. In today's sketch, we'll use the same method we always use - namely, to make sure we understand what we're looking at with regard to lighting, shadow, curvature, bone, muscle, and tissue. The "what's what" in our reference photo. We will work from right to left, starting at the nose, work along the muzzle, then the eye, and finally the ear and the back of the neck. This method makes sense to my brain, and though the proportions may not end up that great, for sure they'll be better than if I tried sketching the entire outline first. Also, today is the first time we are using coloured pencil rather than pen. Grab any dark colour you can find - navy blue, green, purple, brown, red, black - shade and quality do not matter. We just need something that we can use to shade large spaces, then go back over again to add deeper tones. As usual, we are working on a scrap piece of paper. Our objective today is to pay closer attention to our proportions and use effective shading to add contour to the muzzle and skull. A couple of things to keep in mind today; 1. start with a light touch. Too much pressure will flatten the bumps on your scrap paper, making it difficult to add more tones on top 2. keep your coloured pencil in the same position in your hand. We need to develop a flat edge to effectively shade an area. Rotate the coloured pencil only when you need to add a sharp line, e.g. around the eye 3. this is our first try at something this difficult and as usual, we are going for "not horrible". If you can meet that standard, then Job Well Done and YOU ROCK!! Feel inclined to drop a few coins in my paper cup? That would be hugely appreciated!
