The Coffee Can Investing approach, popularized by Mr. Robert Kirby in the 1980s, is a long-term strategy involving the selection of 10 to 15 high-quality stocks to hold for ten years or more. The methodology was introduced to Indian investors via Saurabh Mukherjea's book (Coffee Can Investing) that showcased how the Coffee Can Portfolio (CCP) outperformed the Sensex over 17 years, supporting the strategy’s effectiveness. However despite its historical success, the Coffee Can strategy is facing criticism today, primarily due to its insensitivity to valuations Given the challenges faced by the traditional Coffee Can Portfolio, I have refined it into a “Filter Coffee Can Portfolio” which involves a series of structured steps: Step 1: Focus on companies with at least ten years of operational history and a minimum ROCE (Return on Capital Employed) of 15% Step 2: Apply a minimum sales growth filter of 10% over the past decade Step 3a: Exclude companies with current PE ratios exceeding their historical 3-year average Step 3b: Focus on market leaders or prominent challengers Step 3c: Adjust for market cap & contrary to popular belief, a Coffee Can Portfolio can include midcaps & smallcap companies Step 4: Read annual report, news items, earnings transcript etc. to support the filtered pick Step 5: Invest with purpose including averaging up & monitoring the business on a quarterly basis 👉 Video Chapters: 00:00 Is Coffee Can Investing Still Relevant? 01:25 What is Coffee Can Investing? 02:17 Coffee Can Investing Book by Saurabh Mukherjea 06:25 Step 1: Identifying High-Quality Companies 07:29 Step 2: Applying Sales Growth Filter 09:03 Step 3a: Excluding Overvalued Stocks 10:43 Step 3b: Focusing on Market Leaders 12:01 Step 3c: Adjust for Market cap 14:23 Step 4: Finding evidence in support of stock pick 16:04 Step 5: Invest with Purpose 17:18 Shankar Nath's Viewpoint of Coffee Can Investing #coffeecaninvesting #saurabhmukherjea #longtermstocks #longterminvesting Disclaimer: I am not a SEBI registered investment advisor or research analyst.
