It is found in the book of Genesis, chapters 11-25. The story provides a foundation for the history of God’s chosen people, the Israelites, and it also prefigures the New Testament. It tells the story of how God called Abraham and his wife Sarah to leave their homeland and travel to a new land, promising to make them into a great nation and to bless all the families of the earth through them. Through their obedience and faith in God’s promise, they became the ancestors of the nation of Israel and, ultimately, of Jesus Christ himself. In Genesis 12:1-3, God called Abraham and said to him, “Get out of your country, from your family and from your father’s house, to a land that I will show you. I will bless those who bless you, and I will curse him who curses you; and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.” This call of God to Abraham is the beginning of the story of salvation history, as the Bible states that through Abraham’s descendants, all the nations of the earth would be blessed. In this story, we see how Abraham and Sarah, despite their human weaknesses and flaws, trusted in God’s promise and acted in obedience to Him. Through this faith, they became the ancestors of the nation of Israel, the chosen people of God. And as Christians, we understand that the story of Abraham and Sarah prefigures the New Testament and the concept of the spiritual family of faith.
