Comparing Brushless Motor Torque vs Kv

The big question for today’s video is, what is the relationship between kv and torque output? We make this comparison by looking at identical motors where the only difference between the motors compared is the kv value. The motor manufacture is responsible for publishing the maximum voltage and current specifications. In our comparison we use some of these values to demonstrate the relationship between torque and kv. In the next section of the video we define a new term known as kt. Kt is the torque constant for a brushless motor. Interestingly enough, the kt value is simply the inverse of the kv value of the brushless motor. As long as you are to maintain SI units in your calculation, you will calculate the correct kt value. The torque constant is expressed in the amount of torque per amp. This is not necessarily something we are interested in, however, we can use this value to calculate the torque produced by our brushless motor. The kt value multiplied by the current drawn will determine the amount of torque produced. As current increase, the amount of torque produced by the brushless motor increases. When we look at the results of the brushless motors that are compared, each one of them produces the same amount of torque. The only reason for the difference between the values we calculated is due to rounding. We are able to conclude that within the same motor manufactures model series, kv of a brushless motor does not influence the potential torque output. All of the brushless motors within the same model series have the potential to produce the same amount of torque as long as the motor is loaded correctly!
