Come Fly a CubeSat With Us: A Glimpse Into ORCASat Operations

This is not a tutorial/how-to on operating/flying ORCASat (that will come later), but a glimpse into what goes into operating the satellite as we send commands and collect telemetry during a pass over the UVic ground station. ORCASat only has one ground station, so the only times we can communicate with the satellite are when its overhead. This happens on average 4 times per day, spaced 90 minutes apart. The passes are usually 200 - 300 seconds long, so its not a lot of time when we are operating the satellite manually as shown in the video. We are currently commissioning the satellite. Yesterday we deployed the magnetometer on the CubeSpace ADCS. In this video we are turning on the ADCS, putting it into a Y-Thomson spin, and then collecting magnetometer data so we can re-calibrate it in its deployed state. After that we changed the rate at which we are logging EPS telemetry and turned off the GNSS receiver which we left on. Tristan is flying ORCASat in the video which consists of copying and pasting pre-defined commands into the ground control software and sending them via the ground station radio to the satellite. Once we commission the satellite, day-to-day operations will consist of running a script/command list and it will be much more simple. Everyone else in the video call is watching/double checking what Tristan is doing. We like to have lots of operators present during a pass in case something unexpected happens, especially since the satellite is less than two weeks old and we are still learning exactly how to operate it. Thanks for watching! https://www.orcasat.ca/
