In 2024, Seaton Tramway's Car 14 turns 120 years old, and we also celebrate 40 years since it was launched into service at Seaton in 1984. It was built in 1904 as Car 94, one of the Type A cars of Metropolitan Electric Tramways and ran on routes across North London until its withdrawal in 1935. In 1962 its body was discovered in use as a shed at Waltham Cross by a number of volunteers connected with our previous line at Eastbourne. The "94 Group" was born, and the body was taken to Eastbourne soon after. Initially the idea was to restore it to original condition, but the 94 Group lacked a place to house and operate it, so they donated it to Eastbourne Tramway, and by the end of the 1960s, work was well under way to convert it into a narrow gauge single deck saloon car, suitable for operation on the new Seaton Tramway. The next decade saw all efforts concentrated on completing Seaton Tramway, so it wasn't until 2nd June 1984 that Car 94, now re-numbered 14, was finally launched into service by the late Larry Grayson. This film was made by our late colleague David "Scratch" Mitchell in 2006, and using cine film from the late Gordon Langford, one of the original "94 Group" members, we see the story of its rescue, restoration, its launch in 1984 and finally some contemporary footage from 2004 and 2006. www.tram.co.uk
