Tim Duncan locks down Shaq - 2002 NBA WCSF (PART 1)

Reuploaded in 2 parts due to copyright Shaquille O'Neal shot 44.7% FG in the 2002 WCSF, a remarkable defensive feat for Duncan and the Spurs considering Shaq has never shot below 55% FG in a regular season. The only time Shaq shot a worse FG% in a playoff series was in the 2008 1st Round at 36 years of age. Due to a severe back injury, David Robinson missed almost all of the 2002 1st Round against the Sonics and the first 2 games of the 2002 WCSF. Duncan himself missed Game 4 of the 1st Round against the Sonics due to the death of his father. - http://a.espncdn.com/nba/playoffs2002... When Robinson did return, his effectiveness was limited and Shaq had his way the vast majority of the time that Robinson was guarding him. This meant that Duncan had to step up and take on Shaq as the primary defender. There were two main reasons that Duncan had a lot defensive success with Shaq 1. Duncan forced Shaq away from deep post position, making him catch the ball further out and take shots further away from the basket 2. Duncan was often in excellent position to draw several charges on Shaq In spite of his size disadvantage, Duncan was like Rodman in the sense that he could still use his low base and strength to prevent Shaq from getting deep position. Unfortunately for the Spurs, their lack of offense outside of Duncan was far too much to overcome and the Lakers quickly dispatched of them in 5 games. Interestingly, the Spurs outscored the Lakers through 3 quarters in 4 of 5 games, the exception being Game 3. However, the Lakers outscored the Spurs in the 4th quarter of every game, and this allowed them to come from behind and steal multiple victories.
